Hammett's guitar solos on the album were partially based on Mustaine's original solos (the first four bars of most solos were written by Mustaine). The band started recording the album with Hammett barely a month later. After Mustaine's departure, Metallica recruited Kirk Hammett, who previously played for Exodus and was a one time student of Joe Satriani. Mustaine was fired in April 1983 for his drug and alcohol problems, overly aggressive behavior, and clashes with bandmates. Castro Valley-born bassist Cliff Burton was recruited as his replacement. Because of tensions with Mustaine, McGovney left the band. Metallica's original line-up featured James Hetfield (vocals/rhythm guitar), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), Ron McGovney (bass), and Lars Ulrich (drums). Kill 'Em All is Metallica's debut album, released on Jon Megaforce Records. The group has been touring a whole lot since Asphalt Meadows dropped last September and has found the reception to the new material to be very positive.Īs guitarist Dave Depper tells ABC Audio, there hasn’t been a lot of “the classic, like, seeing people getting up and going to get a beer or looking kinda distracted kind of thing” on the Asphalt Meadows run.
